When goods arrive in the buyer's country, customs charges import duty based on the product's HS code and country of origin. Trade agreements like USMCA, EU-SADC EPA, CPTPP, RCEP, and internal markets (EU, GCC) can reduce or eliminate duty entirely.
Most countries charge VAT or GST on imported goods, calculated on the CIF value (goods + shipping + insurance) plus any duty paid. Rates range from 5% (UAE) to 25% (Scandinavia). The US has no federal VAT — only state sales tax at point of delivery.
To clear customs, the receiver needs: Commercial Invoice, Packing List, Air Waybill or Bill of Lading, and possibly a Certificate of Origin (to claim preferential duty rates). JLog prepares all customs documentation as part of our shipping service.
Most countries do not charge export duties on general goods. Under DAP/DDP Incoterms, the buyer pays import duties at the destination. Under DDP, the seller pre-pays all import charges. Always check origin country export restrictions.
We track 16 major trade agreements: EU Internal Market (0% within EU), USMCA (US/Canada/Mexico), CPTPP (Trans-Pacific), RCEP (Asia-Pacific), EU-SADC EPA, AGOA, GCC, MERCOSUR, ECOWAS, EAC, and more. Certificate of Origin is usually required.
Undervaluing goods on the Commercial Invoice is illegal and can lead to seizure. Wrong HS code classification can result in overpaying or underpaying duty. Always declare the true transaction value and use the correct HS code for your product.
