Frequently Asked Questions
What is an HS code?
The Harmonized System (HS) is an international standard for classifying traded goods. Each product is assigned a numeric code — typically 6 to 10 digits — that determines the import duty rate, VAT applicability, and any regulatory requirements. South Africa uses 8-digit tariff codes based on the HS, administered by SARS.
How are South African tariff codes structured?
SA tariff codes follow the international HS structure: the first 2 digits identify the chapter (e.g. 94 = Furniture), digits 3–4 form the heading (94.03 = Other furniture), and digits 5–8 provide sub-heading detail. SARS adds a check digit for unique identification. Each code has a general (MFN) duty rate plus preferential rates under trade agreements like EU-SADC EPA, EFTA, SADC, and MERCOSUR.
How do I find the right HS code for my product?
Start by identifying the material and function of your product. Browse by chapter above, or use the search bar to find codes by keyword. For accurate classification, describe the product by its material composition, use, and form. JLog's
HS Code Lookup tool provides search with duty rates, or our
Import Calculator can estimate your total landed cost.
What trade agreements affect South African duty rates?
South Africa has preferential duty agreements with the EU & UK (EU-SADC EPA), EFTA (Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein), SADC member states, MERCOSUR (Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay), and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). A valid Certificate of Origin from the exporting country is required to claim preferential rates. See our
Trade Agreements guide for details.
